Initially I couldn't get my head around the fact that this is a young adult fiction book, yet the concept (about teenagers killing each other in a tournament) was so dark. I felt like it should have been written more as if it were a dangerous obstacle, paintball style fight, with risk of injury, instead of the 'only one can survive and must fight to the death' scenario. However, once I got into it, I got the point of how futile and desperate the world was, that the author had created and it all made more sense to me.I really enjoyed the book and the story really pulled me in. It even made me cry in one part. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie adaptation out in 2012 and will definitely read the 2nd and 3rd books in the series.
